Password FAQs

  • How do I reset my Ontario Tech password?

    Visit Resetting network password page and select your instruction depending if you’re a student or faculty and staff.

  • What makes a strong password?
    Your passwords should be at least 12 characters in length – the longer the better. Avoid using keyboard patterns such as "asdfgh", “qwerty” or “12345”. Avoid dictionary words or anything that can be easily associated with you, such as nicknames, birthdates or the names of family members and pets.

    Your new password should include a combination of the following elements:
    • One or more uppercase characters {A - Z}
    • One or more lowercase characters {a - z}
    • One or more numeric characters {0–9}
    • One or more symbol characters {!@#$%^&*()-+}

    Use a passphrase to help create a longer, easier to remember password. For example, the phrase “My jersey number when I played competitive soccer was 27!” can be used to remember the password “Mj#wIpcsw27!”
  • Should I save my passwords in a browser?

    Absolutely not. Security researchers have proven that passwords stored in browsers can be exposed, and if a cybercriminal gains access to your computer, they can steal every password you store in your browser.

  • How can I remember all these usernames and passwords?

    In your personal life, get a password manager. Password managers create, store and sync your login credentials across multiple devices. They can also auto-fill forms on your behalf, removing the need to store your passwords in a browser.

  • How can I choose a password manager?

    Using a password manager is one of the most important things you can do to protect your identity. It can help you improve your personal security with better and stronger passwords, unique passwords for every service you use, and can change passwords automatically for you. It can also make your life easier. You'll never have to remember passwords again, it can automatically add new accounts as you create them, and you will have a full inventory of all your accounts.

    • Choose a password manager.
    • Select a complex and strong master password.
    • Insert all of your accounts into the password manager.
    • Practice good security habits with your password manager.
