Name:
Samantha Rideout
Title:
IT Procurement Specialist
How did you get into your career?
I started at Carleton University in Ottawa, studying linguistics because I was fascinated by how people communicate. That curiosity eventually led me out of my comfort zone into supply chain management, where I managed a small team. From there I discovered my passion for resource management and strategic decision-making.
To help deepen my understanding of how organizations work, I studied Human Resources Management at Durham College, which reinforced the importance of aligning resources with business goals. Once again, I was craving another challenge which brought me to Procurement in IT, here at Ontario Tech. My current role perfectly combines my love of optimizing processes with the impact of sourcing software solutions, that drive innovation and support institutional success. I particularly enjoy the constant evolution of software technology and the challenge of reviewing software contracts and licensing.
How long have you worked in IT Services and what do you enjoy about your role?
I've worked in IT Services for almost 3 years. I enjoy partnering with university stakeholders working on innovative projects to then make informed purchasing decisions that balance value, compliance, security, and performance. Reviewing software contracts and licensing keeps my work varied and impactful, and staying current with evolving tech ensures I continue to learn every day!
What are you looking forward to accomplishing in this role?
I am thrilled to participate in the procurement of software that benefits our students, faculty, staff, and the institution as a whole. The process of software procurement can present some complex challenges, and I firmly believe that the best solutions emerge from diverse perspectives. I'm always eager to collaborate, share ideas, and brainstorm innovative approaches with others; whether working with vendors or different departments on campus, I look forward to building vital relationships and remain committed to enhancing existing processes to keep pace with our ever-evolving campus.
What's something you think someone would be interested to learn about software procurement?
Software procurement isn't just about purchasing licenses - it's about enabling innovation across the university. Every decision we make, helps our community access the tools they need to teach, support and learn. People might be surprised to learn how much strategy goes into this process. We negotiate not only for cost savings but also for compliance, security and scalability. Software procurement is a strategic catalyst for the university's future. By planning for growth, securing our digital environment and aligning technology with academic goals, we create a foundation that positions the university to lead in education and research for years to come.
What do you like to do outside work for fun?
I'm really into tackling DIY projects on our century home. This summer, I took on a full bathroom renovation and loved learning new skills from demolition to plumbing, tiling and painting. When I'm not tearing things apart, I enjoy spending time in the kitchen cooking and baking. This year, I discovered the art of sourdough baking and have found joy in making fresh bread every week for my family.
What's something you're passionate about?
I'm passionate about being a mom to my 4-year-old boy/girl twins. This tops the list and nothing teaches flexibility and perspective quite like motherhood! Raising twins is a unique adventure. They remind me every day to lead with empathy, stay adaptable and celebrate the small wins. I'm also proud of my ability to balance my work and personal life as I stay committed to professional development opportunities to expand my skills in my role.
