Roger Kumar
Title:
Security Analyst
How did you begin your career?
I’ve been into computers and tech since I was a kid. It started with playing Oregon Trail in elementary school, and that curiosity just kept growing. By high school, I was building computers for family and friends, always eager to learn more – whether it meant troubleshooting software or putting together hardware from scratch. Ironically, I had a different career trajectory in mind while in undergrad, but found myself gravitating towards IT once I entered the job market.
My first IT help desk role cemented my career path, as I learned about the many components that make up an enterprise IT environment. During my time there, I was fortunate to broaden my skill set by taking on a variety of system administration responsibilities. I also started getting involved in security by helping out with incident response – it really piqued my interest and set me on the course towards a security role.
How long have you worked in IT Services and what do you enjoy about your role?
I joined Ontario Tech IT Services back in 2022, starting out as a Technology Support Analyst. In this role I provided hands-on IT support to faculty and staff, while learning about the diverse systems managed by our department. I later transitioned into the role of Business Solutions Specialist, taking on responsibilities that included administration of Google Workspace and our SharePoint environment. I also had the opportunity to take on several projects to enhance collaboration at the university and deepened my understanding of how we leverage technology here.
Now in my current Security Analyst role, I get to help protect the university’s systems and data from cyber threats. I enjoy this role because the security landscape is constantly evolving – it encourages me to keep learning and stay sharp. I also enjoy the variety in my day-to-day, whether it’s analyzing unusual activity, improving a process, or helping to secure a system.
What are you looking forward to accomplishing in this role?
I'm really looking forward to laying the groundwork for a strong security posture within the university. As we build out our security operations, I will get to influence the policies, tools, and processes that will protect our staff, faculty, students and their data. I’m eager to make a difference and hope to help promote a culture of security awareness.
What do you like to do outside work for fun?
Outside of work, I spend most of my time with my wife and son. Whether it's grabbing food, going out on an adventure, or just relaxing together, we always have fun. When I’m not spending time with the family, I enjoy working on my cars and tackling home improvement projects. In the warmer months I love biking along trails or the waterfront and kayaking when I can get out on the water. I’m also just getting in to golf – still figuring out my swing and learning the ropes, but I’m really enjoying it so far.
What's something you're passionate about?
I’m told my first word was “car” – I think that underscores my passion for all things automotive. Whether it’s driving, reading articles, watching videos or just working on them, car culture has always captivated me. My peak “car guy” moment would have to be driving a lap on the absolutely magnificent Nürburgring Nordschleife race track in Germany. I’ve been lucky enough to do a few track days at the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park nearby, and hope to get back in to it as my son grows up and I can bring him along for the ride.
