Christopher Whidden
Title:
Manager, Collaborative Technologies
What was your path into this career?
When it came time to decide what I would study at univeristy, I was debating computer software programming, but I knew the math skills needed for that field weren’t something I would excel at. Then I heard about the dedicated IT degree at Ontario Tech, and knew this was the great fit for me.
During my studies, I was fortunate to gain summer experience working in corporate IT, which eventually led to my first full-time role supporting an advertising agency. From there, my next two positions were with companies experiencing significant growth. While these environments could be chaotic at times, my academic experience taught me how to approach challenges systematically, adapt to change and find practical solutions.
One of the things I find most rewarding about working in IT is being able to help build systems and processes that grow with an organization. There is something satisfying about helping an IT environment evolve from “fast is best” to something that is scalable, efficient and built to last.
How long have you worked in IT Services and what do you enjoy about your role?
I have about 14 years of experience in the field, but I’m still pretty new to Ontario Tech, having joined IT Services just a few months ago.
If I had to pick one thing I enjoy most about my new role, it would be all the learning. I’m getting to know a completely new industry and a new team, while also learning about new problems and opportunities to solve with technology. There’s always something different each day and it’s been a lot of fun so far.
What are you looking forward to accomplishing in this role?
In this role, I’m looking forward to helping find ways that technology can provide solutions that make a positive impact across the university. Whether that means improving services, supporting new ways of working or helping people get more out of the technology they use every day, I’m excited to contribute to initiatives that create meaningful value for our community.
I’m especially excited about the potential of AI and other emerging technologies. There are so many opportunities to use these tools to work smarter and create better experiences for students, faculty and staff.
What do you like to do outside work for fun?
Outside of work, I enjoy watching TV, movies and playing video games. I also enjoy spending time with my friends, family and my dog and two cats. And of course, bowling!
What is a fun fact about you that may surprise people?
