Minimum technical requirements
The links below will provide students with the minimum laptop, software, and other technical requirements needed to access Ontario Tech university online learning resources.

Recommended accessories
Live classes will be conducted online using webinar software and the following accessories are recommended to support online learning:
Speakers, microphone or headphones
Many laptops PCs are equipped with speakers and microphones; however, it is recommended that headphones with an attached microphone is used while attending live online classes.
Video camera
While many laptop PCs are equipped with a video camera, some laptop PCs and most desktop PCs may require the use of a compatible USB video camera.
Scanner or camera
This is optional for students. A compatible scanner or camera might be required for students to provide a copy of any physical work completed. A mobile device equipped with a camera may also be acceptable.
Internet connectivity

Internet speed
High speed broadband access (LAN, Cable or DSL) with minimum download/upload speed of 3.5 Mbps is strongly recommended.

Wired connections
A wired connection (ethernet) is recommended over WiFi connectivity to achieve reliable results. If WiFi connectivity is used, it is recommended to work as close as possible to the wireless router to maintain excellent signal strength.

Using mobile devices for tethering
Although not recommended, tethering to a mobile device such as a smartphone with strong signal and minimum download speeds of 3.5 Mbps is an option if broadband connectivity is unavailable. However, internet connectivity using a tethered mobile device may not be sufficient for seamless online video collaboration due to network latency and unreliable nature of cellular connectivity.

Data plan allowances
Please note that expanded use of your internet connections (broadband or mobile) may cause you to exceed your monthly data allowances and could result in significant overage charges. An unlimited data plan is highly recommended.
Optimizing your remote learning experience

Getting ready to connect
- Ensure that you have a reliable stable internet connection.
- Connect the computer directly to the router if possible. If that is not convenient, position the computer as close as possible to the router.
- Try to avoid sharing the router network and hotspots.
- Plug your laptop into the power supply. Your computer might consume high CPU because the software runs on your computer's camera and microphone. Therefore, the battery on your computer can deplete faster.
- If you run into the network or high CPU issues, close browser windows and other apps that are not needed.
- Consider turning off your camera if it is not required for the specific coursework.

Check your connection speed
- Open a browser and search for Speed Test.
- Select Run Speed Test.
- Download and upload speeds of your internet connection will be displayed. You will want to have a minimum download speed of 3.5Mbps for good performance.

Slow or spotty internet?
- To combat slow and spotty internet, move your router to the part of your home where internet demand is highest.
- If you cannot move the router, consider a WiFi mesh network. This will allow you to easily and strategically place connection hotspots for the same network on different floors and areas within your home.
- Your device will automatically connect to the point closest to you to give you the most reliable and fastest speed possible.
- Contact your Internet Service Provider for options.

If all else fails….
- Connect to a video session with the camera off, as it uses more bandwidth than audio.
- Only turn on the camera when presenting and send documentation or send a link out ahead of the meeting, as screen sharing consumes more bandwidth.
- Being mindful of your wireless data plan limits:
- Try connecting with your mobile device, as cell coverage may provide better results.
- Use your mobile phone as a WiFi hotspot.
