Data privacy week 2026

Every time you log in, download an app, submit an assignment or scroll social media, you’re sharing data without even realizing. This week is Data Privacy Week, making it the perfect time to pause and ask an important question:

Data privacy refers to how your personal information is collected, used, stored and shared online. This includes details like:

  • Your name and email address
  • Login credentials and passwords
  • Location data
  • Photos
  • Financial information

Every website, app, and platform you use has access to some of this data and some of them don't have security measures in place to protect it.

What happens if my data isn't properly protected?

Your data isn’t just valuable to you, it’s valuable to cybercriminals. Unprotected data becomes a monetizable commodity for cybercriminals, enabling financial fraud and identity theft. Stolen information like credit card numbers and personal information, can also be used for phishing attacks or illegal purchuses.

How is my data collected?

  • Mobile apps requesting unnecessary permissions.
  • Social media posts and location sharing.
  • Leaving passwords or usernames saved on public devices.
  • Unsecured networks and devices.

6 ways to protect your data

Strong password

Use strong, unique passwords and a password manager.

App permissions

Check app permissions and only allow what’s necessary.

Think before you click

Watch for suspicious emails or text messages.

MFA

Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) to add extra security.

Secure devices

Secure your devices by updating software and avoiding public Wi-Fi.

Mindful sharing

Be mindful of sharing because once it's online, it's hard to remove.

Reviewing your passwords, settings and online habits today, can help prevent issues tomorrow. Stay informed, stay cautious and Think Before You Click.
